Using evidence to advise public health decision makers: an insider's view

Researchers produce evidence and decision-makers receive advice - but how does evidence become advice and who are the players who take research findings and present advice to politicians and budget-holders? Using examples from health checks, obesity, tobacco control, alcohol and vaccination, speakers will give a range of insider perspectives on linking academic research with national and local decisions on what to fund and implement.

Open to practitioners, policymakers and advisors, and academics working in public health. A networking lunch will be provided.

This event will enable attendees to:

• Develop understanding around decision making dynamics and processes within policymaking in public health
• Discuss how evidence is used within those processes
• Explore the trade offs between evidence and other factors in decision making to get maximum benefit for the public’s health
• Understand the role of academic research evidence in a context of the broader landscape of evidence (including practitioner ‘know how’ and patient/ public lived experience)
• Develop relationships and facilitate conversations between policymakers and advisors, practitioners, and academics.
